The Department of Forestry began in 1929 and its first director was J.V. Hofmann who served until 1948. In 1951 T. Ewald Maki was appointed to head up the forest management curriculum. He served until 1970 when C.B. Davey was appointed department head. Davey led the department until 1978 when John W. Johnson succeeded him. John Sydney Barker, who was born on April 20, 1915, was an undergraduate student at North Carolina State College from 1934-1939. He received a degree in forestry in 1939.
